Performance of Testing Tools in Various QA Methodologies

July 4, 2008

The testing team makes use of different testing tools during the software development process. There are as many testing tools as there are QA methods or methodologies such as RUP, Clean Room, Iterative, RAD, Spiral, Scrum and so on. But in the development of a software product the most common methodologies used are Waterfall, Hybrid, V-Model, and Agile. All the testing tools have their own plus and minus points. What makes the task easier for the testers is in finding the right kind of testing tool that fits well in the various QA methodologies. Let’s look how a suitable testing tool improve any test methodology being used as part of the software development lifecycle.

Waterfall Model is a disciplined process allowing multiple projects to run at a time. An apt testing tool would help in allowing multiple releases within each project. So without changing processes the QA team can handle major, minor and patch releases.

V Model is a rigorous and measurable process and therefore mostly used for complex projects. A suitable testing tool helps in maintaining rigor in the testing process. It will also handle multiple testing cycles for system, integration, and final acceptance.

Agile Model is a flexible and fast process and the highlight of this methodology is that it minimizes risk by developing software in short period of time. A fitting testing tool not only helps to organize and track testing by iterations but also handles multiple iterations within each release. It also facilitates information sharing and instant communication among the onsite and offshore testers.

Hybrid Model is such a process that makes transition from one model to another throughout the lifecycle of the project. An appropriate testing tool facilitates different models to co-exist peacefully by allowing easy transition between various modes in the same system. Not only that, it allows reusability of test assets between different modes and lifecycles.
